Teachers’ Perspectives on Supportive and Inclusive Practices (Forsling & Tjernberg, 2023)

From an inclusive education perspective, the interest of this study is in how some Swedish teachers work in diverse literacy practices to address the variety of their students´ conditions and needs. The participating teachers work at four schools with different literacy profiles.

In order to study the teachers’ statements on how they design and stage supportive conditions for inclusive teaching, we used Critical Literacy as the theoretical framework and the related concepts of domination, access, diversity and design were used in the analyze. The teachers in the study highlighted the importance of designing literacy activities based on both supportive and inclusive aspects and with a focus on variation and diversity. In the results more similarities than differences emerged, for instance a focus on multimodal methods, and the urge for didactic flexibility.

Moreover, although the teachers’ statements differed in some areas, the intentions of their design – to include all students in the classroom education, appeared clearly.
